Throughout history, Black women have maneuvered around oppressive imagery that sought to marginalize Black identity and inform the policies and behaviors which create and maintain structural barriers. In response, Black women artists have consistently challenged these oppressive narratives within the world of art. Inspired by their response, I seek to add to the conversation by exploring the inner world of Black women. Despite external pressures placed upon Black women to draw ourselves outwards there also exists a sense of self, safety and wholeness is steadfast in our internal nature. My art centers the question- amidst navigating the complex realities of gender, sexuality, class, religion, and other aspects of identity as a Black woman, where do we land within ourselves?
